As a Jamaican cosmetology teacher for grades 9 to 13, I focus on practical learning that connects with Jamaica’s lively culture. I want students to do more than just learn theories; they should use their skills in real Jamaican-style hairstyles. I show the right ways to do things, making sure students understand both the artistic and technical sides visually. Learning to talk well with clients is important, especially in our community. The lessons cover theory like body anatomy and product chemistry, all adjusted to fit Jamaica. I encourage creativity, letting students show their unique artistic styles. Being clean and keeping things private is a must, and I stress the importance of always learning about new trends in the beauty world. This way of teaching mixes hands-on skills, our culture, and what we need to know, getting Jamaican students ready for success in cosmetology.

Real-life example: Students practice doing traditional Jamaican hairstyles like braids and locs, celebrating the different beauty styles in our culture.

Hi Camaria, I absolutely LOVE this, I bet it’s so engaging and relevant to the young people! I am hoping to explore a Science project where we look at the Physics and Chemistry behind beauty products. Sadly Cosmetology isn’t on offer in the UK.

Sounds really good Camara.  This is also intersting, Edith!  Based on the first part of the second section of the course, you can still incorporate what you love or are passionate about (aspects of cosmetology) in your teaching and learning.

One of my students here in Jamaica looked at ways to remove nail polish.  She looked for the regular removers, time taken to remove and effectiveness as well as cost.  I recommended that she use nails that were being sold.

Another student looked at different types of shampoo and its effect on the hair.  With the number of wigs on offer (synthetic, natural, straight, curly, colours)  this would be quite interesting – use of different bleaching agents.  A look under the microscope after can also add a greater Scientific dimension.  The possibilities are endless :))

As an educator for approximately 20years, my core pedagogy involves using the different methods that will ensure that students attain their fullest academic potential and my goals as an educator are also achieved. I strongly believe that students should be actively and meaningfully involved in their own learning process hence I employ strategies to birth same.

My core pedagogy centers on fostering an environment of inquiry, critical thinking, and hands-on learning. I believe in engaging students with real-world problems and interdisciplinary projects that encourage them to apply scientific principles, mathematical reasoning, and technological skills in innovative ways. My approach emphasizes collaborative learning, where students work in teams to explore concepts, experiment, and share their findings, mirroring the collaborative nature of scientific research and engineering design processes.

I integrate technology not just as a tool, but as an essential component of learning, enabling students to access a wealth of resources, simulate experiments, and create digital artifacts that demonstrate their understanding. Assessment is formative and tailored to each student’s progress, focusing on their growth and understanding rather than solely on final outcomes.

Moreover, I strive to instill a growth mindset in my students, encouraging them to see challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, and to persist in the face of difficulties. I aim to make my classroom an inclusive space where every student feels valued and empowered to contribute, recognizing and leveraging the diverse strengths and perspectives each student brings.

Ultimately, my goal is to prepare students not just to succeed academically, but to become curious, competent, and ethical participants in a rapidly changing, technologically driven world.

My core pedagogy includes Socratic Questionning, use of real world experiences in storytelling form, use of challenges to develop inquiry- and project-based learning, use of practical hands-on activities.  The online platforms are great but often-times not always accessible by students.  Some students use only phones and so do not see all the offerings on the platform especially if they use the related App.

The STEAM pedagogies looked at in this section that I have used are Inquiry and Project Based Learning.
